Wednesday Roundup: favorite spots around town

Lynn has a pretty bad reputation on the North Shore. There’s even a saying that goes:

“Lynn, Lynn City of Sin, you never come out the way you go in.”

It’s sad that people have this stuck in their heads that it’s so dangerous–sketchy and undesirable. Not saying all of Lynn isn’t. It’s definitely got it’s good & bad parts!

Lynn’s for sure not a tourist destination. Definitely not the first town that comes to your mind when you think “cities with good night life or amazing restaurants.”

However, this is where my home is right now and I’m making it my mission to discover Lynn’s little secrets– attractions that make Lynn somewhere people from other cities would come.

And there are actually quite a few places in or near Lynn that I like going to. I’m glad we live here! For my roundup today, these are a few of my favorite things places.

1. Nahant // Lynn Beach
Nahant beach
Miles of sand, Perfect to run on, perfect to sun on. Winter fall summer spring, my husband and I love taking walks to the beach or driving and sitting in the car staring at the waves when it’s too cold.
Nahant is a cute little town where I like to drive around and look at houses. There are houses of all sorts of shapes and sizes– glorious New England seaside houses. I’ve also heard they have great garage sales in the summer, so I’m eagerly awaiting that!

2. Tacos Lupita
This is a great little Mexican Restaurant right in the heart of Central Squre. Their burritos and quesadillas are super delicious. And they’re really fast. You can call it in and they’ll have it ready for you by the time you walk over and pick it up.

3. Turbine Wine Bar
This is one of my favorites in Lynn. I haven’t been here very often, but the people that run the place are very friendly and their beer/wine selection is fantastic. The only food I’ve tried so far is the cheese tasting plate which was delicious, but I’d definitely go here again and try everything they have 🙂 They often have live music (local artists I believe) and dancing here! Go check them out.

4. Arts After Hours
so i have to confess I still haven’t made it to the community theatre here in Lynn but this summer they’re doing Shakespeare in Lynn Woods (Twelfth Night) and I’m planning on going! I’m a big fan of what they’re doing and the idea behind it all – to bring the arts into this city.

5. Zimman’s fabric & furniture… I probably gushed enough about this place here and here so you probably get the idea.

6. Lynn Public Library
Well who doesn’t like to spend some time in an old beautiful building looking at books, DVDs, and books on tape? Colby and I go here a lot to stock up before a long road trip.

Drink | Jump Start: Smoothie Love

I cant believe its Monday again already! This morning I dragged myself out of bed earlier than usual to exercise. Usually I try to stay in bed until the last possible minute but I asked the husband last night to pull me out of bed if I resisted today. 🙂

I’ve been using the Nike Training Club app on my phone for my workouts lately and I’ve felt the difference. The “Ab Burner” left me sore for 4 days. I haven’t been doing very good lately working out 2-3 times a week which was my goal, but I figured today would be a great day to try to start that habit up again.

After the “ab burner” 15-min. workout complete with Regina Spektor and Glee music, I got the “Drill Seeker” Badge which rewarded me with some tasty smoothie recipes!

I love smoothies. Normally I’d just grab a cup of coffee and run to my train but after working up a little sweat, a smoothie sounded a lot healthier! We have had a big bag of frozen berries in our freezer and we had a banana that was too ripe for me to eat by itself so I got out the blender and started dumping things in.

For my “Berry-nana Smoothie,” I combined:

  • A big handful of mixed berries (frozen or fresh)
  • Half a banana
  • 2-3 tablespoons yogurt (I only had vanilla in my fridge, which was perfect)
  • A cup or so of apple juice (depending how thick you like your smoothies)

Et Voila!

Note: Nike’s recipe called for Muesli and mango but I didn’t have any of either.

Flirtin’ with the Curtains

We have a large span of windows in our living room – 168 inches to be exact (14 feet!). We spent a lot of time deliberating how to make curtains work in our living room since the mini-blinds remind me of a rather dreary college dorm. Also, our apartment’s moulding is a nursery school blue: the baseboards, the frames around doors and closets…yes, blue everywhere. Curtains would be nice 🙂

We shopped around for a while online, went to Wal-Mart, Target, TJ Maxx (you never know what you’ll find), but finally decided to make the trek to Ikea. Ikea’s about 45 mins away from us but the trip is always worth it! My husband and I always make a fun date out of it when we go there.

In order to have enough curtains to cover our 3 big windows, we had to buy two sets of 98 inchers which are hard to find elswhere. But Ikea sold the ones we wanted for $24.99/set. Then we got 2 sets of curtain rods (these were $10 each), ditched the dinky rod ends that came with the set and snagged a bigger pair.

The curtains are just barely long enough (we have 9.5 ft. ceilings) but they do the job.

Picture time!

Setting up Ikea Curtains

We thought the process of setting them up would be tricky, but it went rather smoothly!

wrinkled curtains

They were a little wrinkled coming out of the package but after struggling to iron one big curtain for over half an hour (it’s a long process!), I gave up and sprayed some water on them to see if they would unwrinkle with a little gravity.

The next day they looked a lot better, but having them completely closed reminded me of a sketchy funeral home (“Whoa! It’s wicked dahk in hyeah!” Colby yelled one morning) so we tried this:

Now it feels more homey and now we can wave to our friends at Miguel Angel Barber Shop!

views outside our window

Did you notice the lantern on our coffee table? Yeah, we got that when we bought our curtains, along with a mirror. And a plant. And hangers. Oh and chocolate and a hot dog. That place is dangerous.
